Minicomics, Any Way You Want 'Em

Monday, June 06, 2005 - 06:45 PM

Scott McCloud (whom, despite my earlier screed, I love like a blood relative -- this is how we treat each other in my family) challenged us to give BitPass a try almost two years ago. Never content to let an opportunity for mischief pass us by, we agreed to give it a try if Scott's own micropayment project The Right Number showed promise. Scott allowed me to set the terms of the bet, which were that we would use the system if his second foray into offering comics via micropayments met with more than half the success of the first. The idea was that it would show if his intial success was more than just good press and curious folks checking it out; it would show that this was a sustainable business model.

Scott, of course, won the bet. We are now paying up (albeit about a year and a half late, but at least I'll be able to face him without massive guilt at Comic-Con). He got slightly over 50% with his second installment of the comic, and as such, we are offering the following two comics electronically:

These are online-only, super-cool scroll-o-matic, 17-or-18-page electronic versions of our paper minicomics, also available for purchase. We've just made the second story available on the site for the first time, so please go ahead and purchase it if you so desire.

We're interested in seeing what the relative income is from a product available electronically versus the same content available on paper. They're priced differently (the electronic version is a mere $0.25, the same price Scott charges for his BitPass comics, while the paper versions are $4 a pop), of course, since micropayments are designed to make it easy for people to pay only a little bit for content, and paper can't compete on price.

To further muddy the waters, we're offering the paper version of the comic for a buck off when you first purchase the BitPass version. Think of it as a try-before-you-buy type of situation. I'll see how things go over the next few weeks and let you know how the experiment fares.

I've already hit what seems to be a snafu: BitPass says that you can fund an account with "as little as $3." They say nothing about being able to remove said funds later. And I don't use any other sites which use BitPass, so unless Jon can promise us that there will be more comics/content via BitPass, I won't be spending those funds on anything else. I'd pay a quarter each to read those without even thinking about it, but if it turns out I might end up paying $3 for both of them, that's another story. Someone prove me wrong? Please?

I submitted an account username/password and the first screen I got after that was:

" Your current balance is $10.00 USD and access to the item you have selected costs $17.50 USD.
The minimum funding amount is $7.50 USD."

So, I don't know where the $10 came from, but even assuming that's standard practice, they're still overstating the price by $7.25 ...

If we get this worked out, maybe Jon could use it to finish Patent Pending .... ?

We had a nice discussion [goats.com] about this when the bet was in the works.

In short, my understanding is you can't get your $2.50 back, so you have to go buy Scott's micro-content [scottmccloud.com] or hope that John creates at least $3 worth of content.

I fall into the "would pay $0.25 for the individual comix, but there better be some other content to spend the rest on" category.

As the others have said, this is an interesting idea but the minimum payment is a lot more than I would spend - after looking through the whole list of bitpass sites and content, I couldn't find anything else that interested me.

You could put another $7 of content on bitpass (taking payments for the paper versions of minicomics through bitpass would work out nicely) or even just take donations like some of the other sites and I would sign up for it, but I don't see anything that would be that different from the store and premium membership.

There might not be enough people to make it worthwile, but an all-goats micropayment store would be a lot more interesting.

there is some kick ass bit-pass content (just 25c worth but it's really great) at www.e-sheep.com

So that's 75 cents out of your three bucks

It strikes me, additionally, that a good chunk of that 50% return readership may just have been looking for a way to spend their remaining $2.75. A more accurate test of sustainability would probably have been to see how many people refilled their accounts after the $3 ran out. Any clue what the numbers are in that regard, especially since there's been some time to test such a factor?

That page is some sort of bug. After making my account and getting to that screen, I went back and clicked on Jon's links, and was shown the correct information ($3 minimum, zero initial balance, and the item costs $0.25)

For what it is worth, I got a $10 bitpass in the end of 2002. I now have $3.83 left on it--after spending $0.50 on the Goats content.

Now, I'm not petty enough to waste my time chasing down a $3.83 refund, but I do understand how some people feel they are getting charged $1.50 per comic instead of $0.25. Try to look at it this way--if you love comics, you can spend some cents at scottmccloud.com, at e-sheep.com (check out Apocamon!), and probably just end up out a few cents.

Now, about Goats--I would definately spend $0.50/month for access to the bonus comics in the premium membership. They aren't worth much more than that to me, though.

Now that is super genius! Good enough for me to de-lurk and say "double plus good".

Although, I don't know how hard it would be for Jon to pick up the thread again after so long and work it in tandem (tridem?) with the normal Goats and WOP.

The story was written pre-Fineas transformation, but post-zombification.

It's nearly impossible to describe this strip to anyone anymore.

Bitpass Support Folks report that they have fixed this bug now, please let us know if you are still having problems.

I must say that I am extremely impressed with the speed with which this was fixed (and the bizarre manner in which they found out about it through our forums). Either they are unearthly responsive, or robots. I will investigate and get back to you.
