Of Marathons and Multiple Sclerosis

Tuesday, October 18, 2005 - 09:20 AM

My beautiful and kind wife, Amy Melnikoff Rosenberg, is going to run the NYC Marathon on November 6th. This is her first marathon, and she has been training like crazy for months now. She runs 4 or 5 times a week. This past weekend, she completed a 21-mile training run. I cannot tell you how impressive this is to me, as I am mostly sedentary and the idea of walking the four blocks to 23rd Street fills me with dread. I'm very proud of what she's accomplished so far and I cannot wait to see her in action in just a few weeks time.

As part of her participation in the race, Amy is fundraising for the NYC chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Our Aunt Linda was diagnosed with MS in 1998 and Amy is running in the hope that the money raised will help to find a cure for her. Amy has already raised an impressive amount of money, but is a little short of her $3,000 goal. If any of you would like to help out by donating to the cause, please donate here. I would love it if you guys could help Amy meet her goal (or surpass it, even -- I know our readers are capable of tremendous generosity).

Goats will also be donating $1 for every shirt sold between now and the end of October, so that's a good way to help out as well.

Thanks in advance for your help and largesse. I'll be sure to post here after the race and let you know how things went.

PS: I am taking song requests. Here's how it works: After you donate, email one song request to amy@goats.com. I will load all donor song requests onto my iPod, in a playlist called "MS Donors." When I run to this playlist, I will know that I am running to the music of all the supporters of this fundraising effort. Thanks!

Lovely idea, but can i have some guidance on what kind of music Jon's beautiful and kind wife likes to run to?

That way, i don't request, say, She Loves My Cock [lyricsondemand.com] by Jackyl, only to find out that, for some reason, she doesn't actually enjoy chainsaw-wielding hair metal bands.

This thread [goats.com] should provide some guidance as to music choices. Whether you choose to use this list or use it as an exclusion list is an excersise best left to the reader. I would recommend not picking any of those songs for her if you'd like her to complete the marathon with her head intact.

How can I narrow my choices to one? Do I go for a long song so I get more marathon time? Will she even have access to it? Oh the problems I can come up with.

If we use that list she'll set a new world record.

First of all, many thanks to all of you who have donated. It was exciting to see the amount hit $2,020, which means I've raised almost $100 for each of the 21 miles I've been so far able to run in one shot.

As for me hitting a world record when I go out for 26 in a couple of weeks, I think the record is safe and sound.

In terms of music, really anything upbeat will do the trick. I've gotten everything from Polish pop music, 80s hits, hip-hop, showtunes, The Beatles, to Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, which is somehow a fitting soundtrack for my run through all 5 boroughs of New York City. Actually, I would love more songs with a New York theme if you want some direction...

Thanks again, and someday I will get Jon to train for the beer mile. [beermile.com]

Is this your first marathon? I just ran my first a few weeks ago. It wasn't much fun at the time (gross understatement), but I got through it. I even accomplished both of my goals: I didn't finish last and my time was not embarassing. I think these are fine goals for a first-timer.

As for the beer mile, aim high -- the reason I ran my first marathon this year was because my girlfriend ran her first last year.

Best of luck!

Amy

Good luck in the Marathon. The Chicago Marathon is always a big deal, and while I am in no way ready to run a marathon - let alone to the store - I always am so inspired by those who do.

Also - the beermile sounds an awful lot like the Hash House Harriers, for which I am a member. Its an international drinking club with a running problem, and there's sure to be one (or 10) in any part of the world you find yourself. You'll find Jon will probably fit in well with this crowd, if you aren't already memebers.

ON ON!

btw - my song would be Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye, the theme song for the White Sox.

Or - apparently the team has adopted "Don't Stop Believing" from Journey - you could do that one too.
