Goats: 10 Years

Sunday, April 01, 2007 - 10:27 AM

Yesterday, at the 10 Years get-together, Rich asked a bunch of people to try and come up with another currently running webcomic besides Goats that had been running for ten years continuously, and it took a bunch of webcomic professionals a good fifteen minutes until we were able to think of one. There aren't many, that's for sure.

I'm so thankful to all of you readers for coming back here every day and making this strip part of your life, for supporting it with your purchases and your kind emails and your general awesomeness. You've made it possible for me to make a living doing what I love, and I cannot thank you enough for that. If it is a rare thing for a webcomic to run for ten years continuously, it is because an audience like the one I am blessed with is a difficult thing to come by.

My present to you on Goats' 10th birthday is no lame April Fools jokes. Stay away from all the retarded news sites today and settle in with a cup of cocoa and enjoy a stroll through the archives instead. It will be a slightly better use of your time, I promise.

On an unrelated note, I have some great news concerning Phillip that I want to share, but until he comes up with a name for the news I cannot do so. Hopefully he won't procrastinate too much longer.

Oh, and thanks to everyone who showed up yesterday and forced me to do bizarre shots, I am going to have a great time hanging out with my in-laws today with all these hangovers piled atop one another.

UPDATE: Wizard has a short piece about the 10th Anniversary get-together.

What Teledildonix said. It's been the best ride of my life (and, probably, the only thing I've done as often for as long :). Although, if we can't get 10, how about at least 5 years 8 months-ish? ;)

Both Sluggy Freelance and Use Friendly started in 1997, but later than Goats did. PvP and Penny Arcade both started in 1998. I think you really have pride of place here.

You have the Rock nature.

There was one other comic that I have been reading as long as goats, but I gave up at the third incomprehensible Harry Potter lampoon.

Goats is definately a bit of daily brightness in an otherwise dull life of lion taming.

Sounds like I missed out on a lot of awesome. Are those hangovers in a queue, or are they multithreaded?

Congrats on 10 years!

I had a wonderful time that I just barely remember having. Thanks for ten years of the fun and the funny. I'd toast you with my coffee, but I drank it already.

The only one I could think of was Kevin and Kell. There are a couple between 8-9.5, but you've got them all beat.

Screw another 10, why put a cap on it? May you continue as long as your heart desires.

i've spent the last three weeks reading the archives. it's a little sad now that i'm caught up, i'll have to go back to playing sudoku instead of working. but how the hell can a comic be so tangential and so solid at the same time? goats is awesome-possum.

I discovered Goats via Brains4Zombies when researching zombies for a high school project about 6 years ago. It was my first experience with the bizarre, wonderful world of webcomics, and I'm very grateful. Thanks, Jon :D

Congratulations, you crazed (but highly talented as well as brutally stubborn and persistent) madman, on this momentous triumph in comics. Seriously, I'm not exaggerating that. There aren't that many creative endeavours of any kind that have run for 10 years straight (apart from soap operas, of course...) Here's to another fun (and exponentially more lucrative) decade! Nukees (http://www.nukees.com/) has been running for 10 years also (first strip 1/21/97), but that's the only one I could think of.

Congrats, Jon. Anniversaries are somewhat arbitrary markers, but it's a milestone nonetheless. Thanks for so many laughs. I still giggle at Ceiling Babies and Accordion Players.

I like the photo from Wizard, but for those of us who haven't had the privilege of hanging out at the Peculier, can someone put some names with the faces? I'd guess that the fellow on the far left with the understated mustache might be Gary...

Jon I've been reading since 2004 and you've been a great inspiration to me personally and the source of most of my wardrobe.

Keep drawing and writing, sir.

I would be the bald, goateed, grinning idiot in the yellow shirt behind & to Jon's right. To my right are Andy Bell and Steven Cloud. To their right, just off-camera, is a dancing bear drinking a Yoo-Hoo. You'd be amazed what goes on in that place!

Dang! I did try to go there once, but it was closed. Who knew that bars closed on Chrismas Eve? (Or was it Chirstmas night?...)

In Heaven, the bars are always open, they serve nothing but good beer, and your credit is always good.

Sadly, the food still sucks and you have to order out from the Purgatory Lounge next door.

...wait. What were we talking about?
