For the time being, Goats Premium is closed to new subscribers. Current subscribers at the time of this message will have their access to the archives and any new material extended indefinitely, for free (either until we open Premium subs back up, or until the site goes dark in 2012).

Worlds of Peril will be completed. There are approximately 10-14 strips left in the story. I'm hoping to finish it by the end of the year.

Super Premium folks will still be receiving their 2005 SPEY Package, hopefully in a couple of months (once I get the mini done).

Thanks for your patience and understanding on this matter. For further details, see this post.

POLL: Mr. Media Interview + Launch Party

Friday, June 26, 2009 - 09:33 AM

Two quickies: I'm about to be interviewed by Mr. Media's Bob Andelman about the new Goats book in about half an hour, 10am ET. You can find the interview here or use this helpful gizmo to listen:

Also it's looks like we're go for the book's launch party, which will be held on Saturday, July 11th in the afternoon at the Peculier Pub in NYC. More details to come as I figure 'em out.

Friday's strip will be up just as soon as I finish adding in the colors, which will probably happen immediately after the interview. Sorry for the delays and erratic schedule, it's been a crazy couple of weeks as you might imagine.

POLL: Party?
Party!
No party.
Maybe? Dunno.

POLL: Goats: Infinite Typewriters Released Into Wild

Tuesday, June 23, 2009 - 12:13 PM

Goats: Infinite Typewriters is officially released today! We're shipping a good portion of the pre-ordered books today and most of the rest tomorrow, so you should have them in your hot dirty hands soon. I really hope you enjoy the book, the whole team at Del Rey did a fantastic job and it looks incredible.

Theoretically the book should be in stores everywhere! Or that's what they tell me.I'm going to try and take a break from signing later to go scout out the local Barnes and Noble but if you have a chance to stop by your favorite bookstore and see it on the shelves, please take a picture! You can email it to me (jon at thissite'sdomain dot com) or tweet it with the #goatsbook hashtag. I'd love to see how many stores are carrying it. I'll try and list the stores I find out about in an upcoming post.

If you're a reporter or blogger or podcaster or the like and you're interested in talking to me about the book, or if you're a bookstore or comic shop interested in arranging for a signing, please drop me a line or tweet me and we'll set something up. Thanks!

POLL: The Book:
Bought it from Goats already
Planning on buying it from Goats

Late Comics + Infinite Typewriters Hoo-Hah

Wednesday, June 17, 2009 - 10:37 AM

Sorry for the delay in today's comic, I'm distracted by a thousand different things this week, most notably the launch of our new store and the impending release of Infinite Typewriters on Tuesday. If you're looking to order yourself a signed copy I recommend you pull the trigger soon.

Anyhoo, the comic will be up late tonight or early tomorrow, depending on how long it takes me to rewrite this script into something coherent. In the meantime, entertain yourselves with these Infinite Typewriters reviews!

  • Ain't It Cool News says "This collection of online comics by Jonathan Rosenberg is a collection of extended comedy skits that range from hilarous to pee-inducing... GOATS is funny and unique, highlighted by Rosenberg's simplistic cartoony, but confident, art style."
  • Boing Boing's Cory Doctorow says "It's always infrasilly, plumbing depths of silliness that skate on the edge of incomprehensible obscenity and weird-for-the-sake-over without ever slipping over... This all has the refreshing spontaneous unforced high weirdness of the weirder Monty Python sketches, and it will reset your freakiness thermometer to a higher threshold than you thought possible."
  • Chris Yates made a photo comic that says "It may in fact be the best book."
  • Johanna Draper Carlson says "Thick white gloss paper makes for a book with heft; it feels very solid and substantial."
  • Robot 6 @ Comic Book Resources says "But then as I dove further into the book I found Rosenberg attempting to, if not deepen his story, at least stretch it out into something more epic and knotty. Plot lines started to weave into each other. Philosophical and political themes started to emerge and the parodies started to get a bit more thoughtful than “celebrities suck.” He seemed to be trying to create something beyond his initial gag-a-day formula and I find it tough not to admire that.
  • Graphic Novel Reporter includes G:IT in its Hottest Graphic Novels of Summer 2009 roundup and says "Goats: Infinite Typewriters is funny and unpredictable, with no topic considered off-limits."
  • Steven Grant at Comic Book Resources says "...Rosenberg's a good cartoonist and has no qualms about entertainingly excoriating religion, atheism, William Shatner, historical revisionism, and similar taboos before simply launching into manic stories leading to Rosenberg's spurious revelations of the true nature of reality, and the result is often funny, though not laugh out loud funny. Not sure why it's called GOATS either, since there seems to be only one goat (plus two chickens, a goldfish, aliens, bikers, various iterations of walking dead and a pile of monkeys) but one thing I am sure of: this is what Scott McCloud has been talking about all these years."
  • Rick Marshall at MTV's Splashpage says "'Infinite Typewriters' is pretty much a shoo-in for one of my favorite books of the year... "Goats" is a surreal, beer-soaked, dimension-spanning adventure through some of the most unique worlds (and dimensions) I’ve ever encountered... I really can’t recommend this one enough, and I'll probably end up buying myself an extra copy just to loan out."
  • Gary at Fleen says "If you’ve grown up in a certain timeframe, if you voraciously consume science fiction and fantasy stories, and if you find yourself simultaneously engrossed within and repulsed by the conventions of those stories, this book may as well be the sacred tome of your tribe."
  • Mike at Newsarama says "...Rosenberg’s Goats is definitely not your average inside-reference geekfest. The jokes are sharp, the pacing relentless, and the characters vibrantly, twistedly delightful. It’s silly, surprising fun, racing from out outlandish scenario about world conquest to visiting the dimension where the monkeys write the characters’ lives, all while mixing pop culture and political references that will tickle many a geek’s funny bone."
  • Leroy Douresseaux at Comic Book Bin says " The word “surreal” doesn’t do this book justice, nor does “sci-fi parody” really describe the humor here. Goats is like Red Dwarf meets Monty Python’s Flying Circus with Seinfeld’s deft mix of sharp sarcasm and dry wit. There’s so much funny, crazy stuff in here that I could enjoy Goats: Infinite Typewriters for weeks."
  • Shortpacked'sDavid Willis says "There are so many things going on in this book. It's not like some slow-paced decompressed storytelling like Bendis or the more tedious segments from It's Walky!. Stuff, crazy stuff, happens from panel to panel, and there are regularly at least nine panels per page. Not more than twenty pages in, God himself has been randomly devoured. And that's just the beginning! But happenings are not always so densely packed. Some of my favorite parts are when the art is blown up to full-page size. Establishing shots! Moments of wonder and/or terror! There are reasons why Goats is well-revered."
  • Car Bombs' Sonny Strait says "This is funny stuff. It is stream of consciousness writing at its best. Jon Rosenberg may meticulously plan these strips out but they don’t read that way. It’s more like some twisted episode of “Who’s Line is it Anyway?” that started with one subject and never ended. It just mutated and grew into this grand, dream-like monster of a skit."

I'll post more reviews here as they roll in.

Goats: Galctron Cortex Store Now Open @ Topatoco!

Tuesday, June 16, 2009 - 05:01 PM

I'm pleased to announce that the new Goats: Galactron Cortex Store is now open! This replaces our old store as the official place for all Goats merch and purchaseables.

What does this mean for you? You'll be able to buy stuff with your credit card even if you can't stand PayPal. And you'll have access to amazing Topatoco staff to help you with all your purchase-related problems.

For me, this means less time worrying about selling things and more time for drawin'. So that's good too.

We have most of our t-shirts up now, we'll keep adding more in the coming weeks as well as putting pint glasses, totes, and new prints up for sale.

So go check out the new store, kick the tires and order a few test items and let me know what you think.

OH YEAH: if you were planning on preordering a signed and personalized book, please do so by Monday the 22nd! Only regular non-signed books will be available after that date.

Goats: Infinite Typewriters Now Available For Pre-Order

Thursday, May 07, 2009 - 01:25 AM

Hi everyone! I'm very excited to be able to offer my new book, Goats: Infinite Typewriters. If you haven't been keeping up with the news, Infinite Typewriters is the first book in a cycle of three books being published by Del Rey. It'll be officially released on June 23rd, but I'm putting it up for pre-order so we can gauge demand and have adequate prep time to try and get people their books in a punctual manner.

This book has been more than five years in the making. There are about 2 1/2 years' worth of strips inside, 176 pages of full-color absurdity and epic scifi madness.

It has been designed as an introduction to Goats for folks who have never read it before. If you're looking to evangelize Goats to your friends, this is your bible. It contains (among other things) the origin stories for Oliver and Diablo, the Doodletown arc, Chaos Pope action, Good Hitler vs. Space Hitler, the Las Vegas webcomics convention sequence (starring many of your favorite webcomics personalities) and of course the Infinite Typewriters storyline. It also includes partially redrawn material from Contains One Space Battle, as well as bonus never-before-seen comics, an intro by Tycho Brahe of Penny Arcade fame, and other assorted doodads. Lots of the early artwork has been "improved" for consistency. I have have worked my ass off for years to make this as good a book as it can be. When you hold it, it has heft to it. You can feel how full of insanicrazy it is.

Can I be serious for a bit? This is probably the most important moment of my career, a real make-or-break moment. The sales of this book are going to determine my publisher's interest in printing future books. The sales of this book are going to determine whether you ever get to see a Goats TV show or movie. These things, as insane as they sound, are not completely impossible. I'm hoping to make them happen but I need your help.

You can have a real impact on the future of Goats with your purchase. I need every single person reading this to go and order a copy. Yes, YOU. Every one of you. If you have enjoyed this comic, if you have ever had an inkling of interest in supporting what I do, this is the way to support it. Buy a copy for yourself. Buy copies for your friends. Ask for it at your local bookstore if you don't like to purchase things online but PLEASE buy a copy. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Pre-ordering your copy means you'll get a free full-color plastic Infinite Typewriters bookmark and an Infinite Typewriters postcard with your book. Also you'll be at the front of the line if you're ordering a signed and personalized edition (drawing all those chickens takes time).

Books will ship on or about June 23rd if all goes well. Thanks in advance for your amazing support. I have the best readers in all of webcomicdom and I really hope you enjoy this book, because I made it for you.

TCAF + Folks Gots Books

Tuesday, May 05, 2009 - 10:15 AM

If you're a Torontonite or a Torontonarian, be sure to come to TCAF this weekend! I'll be there splitting a table with Chris Hastings and Carly Monardo and their adorable tiny dog. There will be a ridiculous number of cartoonists in attendance and it looks like it's going to be an amazing show. I'll have display copies of Infinite Typewriters for youse guys to take a look at, and hopefully something I will be able to sell for Canadian money.

Speaking of things to sell, some of my friends have just released new books!

  • Rich just released his answer to Terminator Salvation, CRUSH ALL HU-MANS!, comprised of 64 pages of unapologetic robot violence. Be sure to pick up a Squishable Red Robot while you're at it. Norah tackles hers and then yells "RED ROBOT! RED ROBOT!" until the neighbors complain.
  • Mer's just released Octopus Pie Book 3, which is her best yet. The Nerds vs. Stoners laser tag match is a classic I would like to see replicated IRL at next year's NEWW. I just have to figure out which team to play for before then.
  • Kate's new book is SOLD OUT, I hear? I'm sure they'll print more. They must! Go get in line.
  • Brad's latest annual report is in color! Now that's what I call high ROI.
  • Dave's first collection just got nominated for an Eisner! Dare you miss out on his newest offering? I think you dare not. You darens't.

There's at least one book missing from that list. But more on that later today or tomorrow, I hope.
